Description
This teardrop-shaped Bizen vase dates from the Shôwa period; its surface shifts between warm tones of red and violet and is traced by fine, pale ash deposits – traces of the long, uncertain firing in the wood-fired kiln that make every piece of Bizen ware a unique work.
The simple, organic silhouette, with its narrow neck above the full body, follows the classical Bizen formal vocabulary, which dispenses entirely with glaze and painting. This restraint allows the pure beauty of the clay and the chance, unrepeatable effect of the fire to take center stage – an ideal that has appealed to collectors of Japanese tea ceramics for centuries.
The vessel bears the signature of the potter Otomokyu (大友久), who created with this vase a calm, powerful example of the Bizen tradition. The unique work is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which also documents its provenance.
