Description
Rich red covers the bulbous body of this double-gourd vase, on which a pine branch unfolds in fine gold lines and silvery shimmering bark – a powerful contrast that gives the vessel a festive, almost majestic presence.
The pine is one of the most important symbols of good fortune in Japan and stands for longevity and steadfastness, which is why it is often depicted on Kyo ware in combination with strong base colors like this vibrant red. Kyoto-yaki has united different techniques and styles of the imperial city for centuries and is considered one of the most demanding porcelain traditions in Japan, requiring extensive experience in glaze application and gold decoration.
The curved shape, with its narrowed neck above the full vase body, makes this unique work a striking eye-catcher that is excellently suited as a solitary display piece. The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which also serves as elegant storage.
