Description

From warm reds and copper tones to smoky gray, the play of color on this Bizen vase spans a wide range, its earthy effect radiating a calm, almost meditative atmosphere. A single gold-colored ash spot sets a luminous accent amid the shimmering surface.

Bizen ware deliberately forgoes glaze and painting – its beauty arises solely in the kiln, through the interplay of flames, wood ash, and a firing time that often exceeds one week. This archaic, immediate aesthetic makes Bizen-yaki one of the most highly regarded traditions among collectors of Japanese tea ceramics.

The cylindrical, slightly tapering form of this vase bears the signature of the potter Toho (陶朋), who with a steady hand created a vessel of understated, powerful presence. The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, offering the unique work a dignified place of storage.
