Description
From a wide, mist-shrouded river course, a small, overgrown rocky island rises, on which slender trees and shrubs stretch out in all directions. The delicate coloring in muted gray and brown tones creates a floating, almost weightless mood.
Far from any trace of human presence, this composition concentrates entirely on the interplay of rock, water, and vegetation, a pictorial type deeply rooted in classical sansui landscape painting. Painted on silk, the work was created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989).
The jikusaki made of wood complements the careful classical mounting. A quiet, meditative hanging scroll for all who delight in the pure, unassuming beauty of Japanese river landscapes.
