Description
Jagged rock peaks rise out of dense fog, while a waterfall plunges into the depths in several cascades over dark stone. At the foot of the cliffs, a small thatched-roof hut nestles among gnarled pines – a place of retreat amid wild nature, a motif recurring throughout classical Chinese-Japanese landscape painting. Cranes move as tiny dots across the hazy sky, emphasizing the vastness of the mountain world depicted.
The scenery is executed in fine hand-painting on silk, with delicate gray and ocher tones for the fog and bolder blue-green accents for the pines, lending additional appeal to the depth of the image. The signature and the red artist's seals in the upper right reveal the hand of an accomplished painter of the Shōwa period, who conveys with a confident brushstroke the transition between dissolving distance and a foreground rich in detail.
The kakemono comes in a wooden box (tomobako) signed by the artist himself, suggesting a deliberate, carefully considered creation. The mounting, with a gold-colored, floral-patterned border and runners made of synthetic material, completes the harmonious overall picture – a calm, meditative landscape painting for lovers of traditional Japanese painting, equally suited to unfold its effect in the living room or in the tea room.
