Description
Earthy gray and brown tones, crossed by fine white brushstrokes, define this set of five handcrafted sake cups. The shimmering, iridescent glaze with its smoky sheen results from reduction firing, in which a lack of oxygen in the kiln produces the characteristic green and gray tones. Each of the five guinomi has a slightly reddish edge to the clay body, which reveals the warmth of the fired clay and gives the cups an individual character despite their shared shape.
The cups bear the signature of the potter Morioka Kisaragi and date from a time when handcrafted sake ceramics were especially valued in Japan. The simple, understated form language recalls the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, in which irregularity and natural material effect count for more than flawless symmetry. The five cups are ideally suited for drinking sake together among family or friends.
