Description

Slender and with a slightly flared neck, this tokkuri made of Karatsu ware rises with a shimmering glaze in muted earth tones, enlivened by fine flow marks and subtle variations in color. The subtly irregular shape reveals its freehand fashioning on the potter's wheel, lending the vessel a warm, distinctive presence.

Karatsu ware is among the oldest ceramic traditions of Japan and has been closely connected to sake and tea culture for centuries. Its restrained, earthy aesthetic is exemplary of the Japanese ideal of beauty known as wabi-sabi, which seeks beauty in the imperfect and the transient.
