Description
Warm white meets earthy rust spots and metallic shimmering gray brushstrokes – this sake cup shows the characteristic hallmark of Shino-yaki, one of the oldest and most respected glaze traditions in Japan. The thick, feldspathic glaze is typical of this style and produces the fine, net-like crackles during firing that give the surface its particular vividness. The Guinomi bears the signature of Bungo Yamamoto and its irregular, slightly angular shape reveals the potter's free handwork.
Individual reddish-brown spots (Hi-iro) are caused by iron oxide in the clay and vary from piece to piece, so that each cup remains a unique work. Depending on the light, the shimmering surface appears sometimes velvety matte, sometimes slightly glossy.
The sake cup is delivered in a wooden box personally signed by the master potter, which serves for dignified storage and documents the piece's provenance. As a small yet expressive vessel from the Shōwa period, it is suitable both for use in drinking sake and as a standalone collector's piece of Japanese ceramics.
