Description
Copper rather than ceramics defines this slender vase, whose bulbous body flows into a long, tapering neck – a silhouette reminiscent of traditional Japanese sake bottles. The surface shows fine, even turning marks that testify to the careful hand-hammering and shaping of the metal, while a warm, reddish-brown patina lends the metal depth and warmth. The vase bears the signature of Kageaki Watanabe, whose works are known for their clear, calm forms.
In the light, the copper surface unfolds a subtle play of colors between copper red, bronze, and dark shadings, which deepens further over time with appropriate care. This natural capacity for aging is one of the particular charms of handcrafted metalwork from Japan.
The vase comes in a wooden box signed by the master, which provides secure storage and attests to the authenticity of the piece. With its elegant, timeless form, this copper vase from the Shōwa period is excellently suited as a decorative highlight for flower arrangements or as a standalone collector's piece of Japanese craftsmanship.
