Description
Slender and rising with a gently curved, leaf-like silhouette, this vase has a dark violet-brown surface traversed by fine, brightly shimmering veins. This natural pattern forms during wood firing through ash deposits and mineral components of the clay, making each piece of the Kasama tradition a unique work with individual markings.
The slightly asymmetrical opening, organically shaped at the top, deliberately forgoes strict symmetry and clearly reveals the traces of hand forming. Kasama-yaki from the Ibaraki region is among the most versatile Japanese ceramics traditions and is known for its creative openness, ranging from rustic-earthy to fine and sculptural – this vase combines both aspects in an appealing way. It bears the signature of the potter Kashiwa Touen Hobun (柏陶園豊文).
The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which ensures dignified storage and documents its provenance. With its sculptural form and its vivid, iridescent surface, this Kasama vase is an impressive example of Japanese ceramic art and pottery, which presents itself equally well on its own or fitted with a single branch.
