Description
As if shaped from molten amber and ebony, the glaze of this slender bottle vase flows from a warm, finely speckled beige-brown at the neck into a deep, glossy black on the bulbous body. This flowing color gradient results from the changing oxygen supply in the kiln during firing, making each vase of the Kasama tradition a distinctive color image in its own right.
The classic bottle shape, with its narrow, elongated neck and voluminous body, recalls traditional sake vessels, though here it was designed purely as a decorative vase. Kasama-yaki from the Ibaraki region is among the most versatile Japanese ceramics traditions, combining rustic firing technique with a remarkable elegance of form - a combination that appears in especially pure form in this vase. It bears the signature of the potter Koji Arata (荒田耕治).
The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which ensures dignified and secure storage. With its glossy, iridescent surface and clear silhouette, this Kasama vase is a stylish statement piece for lovers of reduced Japanese ceramic art.
