Description
In a delicate blue-green reminiscent of the color of seawater in morning light, this bulbous vase of Kutani porcelain presents itself. Flying cranes move across the curved body before a gently contoured mountain landscape – a motif that has always stood for happiness, longevity, and marital fidelity, and ranks among the most beloved symbols in Japanese art.
The fine crackle structure of the glaze, which spreads like a delicate net across the entire surface, is a deliberately employed design device of the Kutani tradition and results from differing expansion coefficients of the body and glaze during cooling. The spherical form with the tightly drawn-in neck reinforces the calm, self-contained overall impression of the vase and makes the motif appear as if framed within a pictorial section. It bears the signature of the artist Kosho (香祥).
The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter. With its cool, soothing coloring and the poetic crane motif, this Kutani vase is suitable both as a decorative one-of-a-kind piece and as a gift with deep symbolic meaning.
