Description
Against a deep cobalt blue, this vase unfolds a magnificent motif of two golden pheasants and blooming peonies, their white petals standing out clearly against the dark glaze. The gold-rimmed spout and the finely worked contours of the birds and leaves lend the vessel a festive, almost precious appearance, characteristic of traditional Kutani ware.
Kutani-yaki is one of Japan's best-known porcelain traditions and is famous for its bold coloring as well as its elaborate painting with gold and enamel colors. The glossy, iridescent glaze of this vase and the clearly defined bulbous form exemplify this craftsmanship. The piece is marked by name through the signature of the potter Seiho, found on the body of the vessel, attesting to his authorship.
The vase is delivered in a wood box signed by the master, which serves not only for safe transport but also for stylish storage – a gesture of appreciation for the artwork that is traditional in Japan.
