Description
The crane has long been regarded in Japan as a symbol of longevity and good fortune, and it is precisely this motif that rises in restrained, almost graphic elegance as a cream-white inlay against the reddish-brown, unglazed body of this vase – a quiet, powerful contrast between image and ground.
The simple pear shape with its long, cylindrical neck gives the vase a particularly clear and calm presence and directs the eye specifically toward the crane motif. This combination of restrained form and symbolically charged imagery is characteristic of sophisticated Kyo ware, which traditionally places great value on the balance of form, color, and decoration.
This unique work is signed by Masayuki Imai (今井政之), whose calm, precise hand is evident in the clear linework of the crane. The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, offering the work a secure and stylish place of storage.
