Description
Delicately gilded leaves, as if stirred by a breath of wind, extend across the gray-violet shimmering, finely crackled surface of this vase. The elaborately applied gold leaf stands out clearly against the earthy matte glaze, lending the piece a festive, refined presence despite its quiet base coloring.
The vase bears a small seal of authenticity inscribed with Kiyomizu-yaki – that renowned Kyoto ware tradition that has been known for centuries for its technical refinement and its combination of craftsmanship and decorative finesse. The fine crackle cracks in the glaze arise from the differing expansion of the ceramic body and glaze during cooling and lend the surface a lively, almost parchment-like texture that further sets off the graphic leaf motif. The spherical form with its slightly flared rim bears the signature of the potter Mazafumi Fujihara.
The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter. With its combination of restrained crackle glaze and refined gold accent, this Kiyomizu vase is a particularly refined example of Kyoto ware ceramic art and an elegant addition to any collection.
