Description
A deep, almost black brown with warm amber tones that in places seem to flow like liquid across the wall of the piece characterizes the glaze of this angular vase – an effect created through multiple applications of glaze and the characteristic kiln atmosphere of the Seto kilns.
Seto is one of the oldest and most important pottery centers in Japan, with a history of glazed ceramics spanning more than a thousand years – the region is so closely tied to the craft that the Japanese word for ceramics, "setomono," is derived directly from it. The angular, slightly asymmetrical shape of this vase stands in deliberate contrast to the glossy, flowing glaze.
The piece was made by Shunrei Kato (加藤春鼎), whose signature affirms its place within the long Seto tradition. The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, offering this unique work a fitting setting for storage.
