Description
Slender and cylindrical, this vase rises with a sand-colored, finely speckled surface enlivened by a loosely painted grass or bamboo motif in dark brown. The contrast between the earthy, matte outer wall and the glossy black interior glaze at the upper rim gives the plain cylinder a surprising depth and draws the eye deliberately to the calligraphic-looking brushwork.
The reduced formal language – a straight, tall cylinder without a flaring shoulder or foot – deliberately dispenses with any excess and leaves the motif the greatest possible space. This restraint is typical of Japanese vases made for ikebana, the art of flower arranging: the vase is meant to carry the blossoms without competing with them. The vase bears the signature of master potter Seitoku Kawai (河合誓徳).
The piece is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which allows for safe storage and documents its provenance. Whether fitted with a single flowering branch or displayed as a standalone ceramic object: this vase brings the quiet elegance of Japanese craftsmanship into any room.
