Description
A warm, creamy-white light seems to radiate from the glaze of this small sake cup, interspersed with fine orange-red spots that spread across the surface as if by chance – an effect that gives Shino ware its unmistakable, almost living presence.
Shino-yaki is one of Japan's oldest glazed ceramics traditions and originated in the context of the tea ceremony, where the thick, milky glaze and the characteristic fire spots are prized as an expression of natural beauty. The slightly square shape of this cup, with its irregular rim, underscores this deliberate departure from flawless symmetry.
The Guinomi Made of Shino Ware by Sato Yasumoto (佐藤康元) was crafted by him, whose calm shaping gives the cup a pleasant balance between strength and restraint. It is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which safely preserves the unique work and attests to its origin.
