Description

A fine network of reddish-brown crackle lines runs through the milky-white glaze of this tea bowl, recalling the pattern of frost on a windowpane. This characteristic crackle structure is the hallmark of Shino ware, one of Japan's oldest glaze traditions, in which a thick, feldspathic glaze breaks open irregularly during firing, creating an individual pattern that can never be exactly predicted.

The slightly irregularly shaped wall with its organically formed rim bears the stamp of master potter Shuzo Kato. Inside the bowl, the same delicately toned glaze shimmers, so that the interior and exterior effects relate to one another harmoniously. It is precisely the shifting transitions from warm grayish white to rusty accents that make this chawan a particularly vivid example of traditional Japanese tea ceramics.

The bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which provides for dignified storage while also documenting its provenance. Whether as a vessel for the tea ceremony or as a standalone collector's piece, this Shino chawan conveys the quiet, unassuming aesthetic that has distinguished Japanese ceramics for centuries.
