Description
Like a quiet moon symbol, a perfectly round, rust-brown ring stands out against the bluish-white glaze of this tea bowl – a chance product of the firing process that gives the bowl an almost meditative calm. Fine reddish speckles are scattered across the entire surface, creating the shimmering depth of color typical of Shino ware.
The feldspathic Shino glaze reacts sensitively to temperature and oxygen supply during wood-firing, meaning that color gradations and mottling can neither be predicted nor repeated. It is precisely this unpredictability that makes every Shino bowl a unique natural event captured in fired clay. The robust, slightly conical shape with its stable foot conveys a sense of groundedness and complements the calm, contemplative character of the glazed surface well.
This handcrafted tea bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter and was made during the Heisei period. With its quiet, almost cosmic play of color, it is excellently suited for the tea ceremony or as a contemplative collector's piece.
